Category Analyst



Job Purpose

To provide reporting, analysis and insights which shape & support Category Management activities throughout the business, across all regions and customers.

To represent and support the Category function internally on:

  • Uncovering actionable insights for range reviews, customer meetings, NPD planning and Go to Market plans.
  • Reporting and analysis for key business issues
  • Cross functional teams

To be a true global resource – flex time & focus against agreed business priorities for maximum impact and best in class results: ie agile working.


    • Provide key regular category reports for use within the business
    • Utilising a variety of global reporting platforms eg) Nielsen, Quantium, Sainsbury’s Together With, IRI, Excel
    • Across a number of key category metrics: Share, growth & 5Ps: Price, Promotion, Product (range), Place (Space & Display) and People (shopper)
    • Trackers for NPD/ key commercial initiatives
    • Work closely with Sales & Finance Teams to optimise shared business reporting
    • Provide ad hoc reporting to support projects internally and externally, in line with strategic priorities
    • Assure, check and monitor accuracy of scheduled delivery of data from data providers eg Nielsen
    • Ongoing analysis and interpretation of data to provide meaningful and actionable insights
    • Contribute to and present at internal business forums
    • Provide internal teams with appropriate category analysis, insight & presentation support to sell-in MPM agenda to customers



  • Global 5P category strategy & tactics to drive growth:
    • Develop, test, analyse and evolve 5P plans by market & channel
    • Range (Product) / Price / Promotion / Space & Display (Place)/ Shopper (People)

    • Be a data & insight champion & lead best practise:
      • Identify & leverage sound Category insights to drive
      • MPM impact in market via range review & JBP process
      • Internal decision making & planning
      • Lead, champion and educate the use of data within the business: sources, requirements and how they are used to add value.
      • Shape the standardised global reporting.
    • Development of strategic category insights & growth plans to support ongoing planning:
      • Annual Business & Commercial planning
      • Brand & Marketing
      • Innovation & Product
      • Sales & Account


  • Customer range review process, representing a strategic Category view as well as compelling, insight driven selling stories to achieve MPM objectives in market
  • Strategic planning, support MPM agenda to optimise customer/ channel mix
  • Influence customer & channel strategy & deliver strategic long-term growth
  • Support development of aligned business plans across customer portfolio


  • Work closely with the Product Team to deliver:
  • NPD pipeline planning, commercialisation & Go To Market (5P plan)
  • Insight driven Stage Gate proposals
  • Strategic Category mapping, vision & planning
  • A strategic MPM product portfolio plan to deliver commercial growth
  • Brand, pack & price strategy

Qualifications, Skills and Experience:


  • Advanced Excel
  • Experience working with large amounts of complex data and information from a variety of sources.
  • Strong analytical skills & highly numerate with the ability to turn data into actionable insights.
  • Experience presenting complex data in a digestible summary – through both written and visual means.
  • Comfortable spending high proportions of the day on reporting & analysis
  • Good presentation & communication skills
  • Ability to build open and honest relationships with people across all levels of the business.


  • Educated to degree level
  • FMCG experience
  • Experience of using retailer data platforms eg Nielsen for reporting & analysis
