Job Purpose

This role has responsibility for setting the strategy and direction for the Technical team, aligning with the strategies of brand, innovation and supply chain. Lead the existing team to deliver the strategy through ongoing workstreams as well as project work. Lead, review and optimise processes across all workstreams of Technical, Quality and Regulatory.

This role deals with a wide variety of work tasks including, but not limited to the following:

Main Responsibilities

Own

  • Setting the strategy and direction for the Technical team. This strategy must align to the MPM Brand, Innovation and Supply Chain strategies
  • Leading the Technical team – setting priorities accordingly for the team and managing their workload
  • Define what legal and regulatory standards MPM must work to across all regions
  • Maintain an awareness of current and future legal and regulatory changes – communicating and implementing any necessary changes throughout the business. This includes FEDIAF, AAFCO & AQSIQ
  • Maintain MPM’s quality procedures and standards. Ensure that all suppliers are managed to meet these standards
  • Review existing quality policies & processes and make suggestions for changes and improvements then work with the existing team on how to implement them
  • Oversee the maintenance and development of product and technical specifications for all MPM SKUs
  • Maintenance of the MPM ‘banned list’ for ingredients
  • Oversee the management of the customer and consumer complaints process along with reporting and analysis to understand root causes and resolution of issues
  • Setting and management of supplier audit requirements
  • Act as best practice champion for the contract manufacturing standards worked to by the supplier network
  • Manage third party relationships relating to Technical work including independent Testing & Analysis Laboratories & Palatability testing providers
  • Identification of risks & resource bottlenecks relating to TRC that should be escalated to the business
  • Take ownership of projects to resolve technical issues or deliver technical solutions as needed, including leading projects teams including external parties and cross functional MPM team members

Support

  • Support the Head of Innovation with overall strategic development of the product portfolio
  • Support the Innovation team around Technical issues with new and existing product development
  • Work with the Innovation team to identify and assess potential food and packaging innovation opportunities including ‘blue sky’ thinking
  • Resource planning and people development of the Technical team to deliver the short, medium and long term goals of MPM
  • Review of potential suppliers to MPM versus Quality, Regulatory, Environmental and Ethical standards
  • Review and optimisation of processes across all workstreams of Technical, Regulatory and Compliance
  • Support customer interaction for Technical and Quality matters
  • Oversee Technical approval of all new artworks (both in terms of product specifications and regulatory compliance)
  • Support the ongoing work by MPM as a B Corp accredited company, personally or using the team members (also PSC in the US). CSR and Sustainability are important to MPM
  • Develop relationships with useful third-party organisations such as Trading Standards, NGOs and industry bodies

Provide

  • Key reports for the business for Technical team
  • Leadership and advice on technical matters for Technical team and also for the MPM Leadership team
  • Provide the Supply Chain Director with any critical escalations that may need alignment, adjustment of overall resource or additional cost sign-off

 

Skills

Essential 

  • Understanding of food manufacturing and contract manufacturing
  • A strong technical/quality assurance management track record within the food industry (preferably pet food but not essential) with minimum 10 years’ experience
  • Ability to make decisions and escalate as required
  • Commercial acumen including Brand understanding (with claim substantiation/artwork content etc.)
  • Ability to leverage network of external contacts in pet food industry
  • Independent worker able to understand when to make decisions and when to escalate
  • You will have excellent working knowledge of customer requirements, BRC standards, QMS and food safety
  • A proven track record of being able to influence a business at senior level
  • Previous experience of having managed / developed strong team performance to meet business goals
  • Highly organised and can prioritise workloads
  • Someone who is not afraid to challenge performance, timescales or be the bearer of bad news
  • Being comfortable with conflict/ability to manage conflict
  • Previous exposure to working in a project environment
  • Project management experience
  • Understanding of product development processes from within the FMCG industry
  • Strong communicator at all levels with the ability to coach and influence others
  • Attention to detail – ensures accurate delivery of information in a timely and effective manner
  • Effective relationship builder – dedicated to meeting expectations of internal and external customers, developing and maintaining effective customer relationships gaining trust and respect.

  • IT literate including use of PowerPoint, word, excel and outlook
